Red_light * Alternative scene * Thai food

1) Red-light district

2) Alternative scene

3) Thai food take away

In many Europeans and Asian countries I lived in, these three things seem to pop up together or close by each other.

———————————-

Red-light district and alternative scene are like a good buddy. Many times when I searched after a cut edge/underground musical or art scenes, I found myself near by a brothel or red-light venue. Whether you walking along langstrasse in Zurich, passing by a northern part of Brussel or hanging around Silom street in Bangkok, these relationships seem to obvious. In fact, it seems to me lately that the cities or countries which seem to be more sexually liberal or even well-known for prositutution are also tend to be full of alternative art scenes. (Think Amsterdam and Berlin)

- Could sex increase an emotional creativity?

- Does the “red-light district” decrease the rental price of the venues so the “young bohemians” have more chances to live and show their works in these venues?

- The amount of a red-light district in Stockholm is almost equal to zero. Can this explain the lack of Stockholm’s underground/ sub-culture scene?

To be a good engineer or doctor takes much time and effort. 4-10 years of school which will teach you to analyze many things to their deepest details.

To make a good food, however, might not need a person to go to school. In my opinion, with enough practice and a good sense, a person can cook a great food. It probably does not matter if you are a newly graduate from an overprice culinary college in London. Or, if you are a Thai prostitute works in a European red-light district who decides to start up a take away spot…..

HOME | Rajadamnern

HOME

A project dedicated to all people who wander the world with special bonds to places they have felt at home with. “Might be just a place to sleep”, “Might be just a certain street or time”, “It might be home”…?

Home (noun) : A place or a physical structure within which one lives; a house, apartment, hut, bungalow…

“Home”… the meaning of this word has changed a lot for me lately. Sometimes, I am not quite sure where or what it is anymore? It might be due to the fact that the city where I was born and grew up has changed in a way I am not so comfortable with. The meaning of this word in a physical sense is getting less and less important to me. “Home” seems more of a feeling or a state of mind that happens to me from time to time. It might be a mix of feelings when I feel secure, when I am very familiar with something and where I am totally worry-free.

Home (noun) : A headquarters; a home base.

Rajadamnern to me was about driving to my favorite club with my best friend back in my college days. We usually went there on Wednesday nights, passed by 7-Eleven to get a big bottle of Leo beer and drank it along side Kok-Wua junction. We’d hang out on the street till we got tipsy and ready for club action!

I have realized that the best part was not about going to the club, it was actually the street itself…I enjoyed everything that Rajadamnern street provided me with. I loved to be there after midnight to watch as the streets emptied and became quiet, as the night time weather got cooler and less humid, as the homeless fell asleep, encounters with people who thought we were prostitutes and then the REAL prostitutes at work. Somehow, I felt totally relaxed, secure, safe and free. Even when I am sitting here and writing about it now, those memories still make me feel at “home”.

Home (adverb) : On or into the point at which something is directed; The arrow struck home.

These last few years, I have been feeling awkward and somewhat scared of an extreme “clean” look. It might sound strange but I feel that many people and places with this look often nurture an uncivilized mind, live in isolation of one another, in fear of communication or sincerity; become unfamiliar and removed from nature or the home they once had.

"VAN"Home (adverb) : To the center or heart of something; deeply: ‘Your comments really hit home’.

Therefore lately, my heart has been constantly searching for some thing familiar, something from the early ages that takes me back to my origins:…dirt, dust, mud, a broken stone, bricks that were not properly placed, a lawn un-mowed, curvy, organic shapes, plants growing out of walls, a tropical forest and familiar smells, body odors (animals & humans)…what do you think about this?

Home (adverb) : To go or return to one’s residence or base of operations.

I have met up with a childhood friend whose photos I like very much. We shared the same feeling about “home” and so decided to build that “home”…..mentally, visually.

Through photography, this “home” was built based on the feelings and memories around the street of Rajadamnern in Bangkok, Thailand.

It is my hope that one day as we journey across this beautiful planet…. If we happen to feel lost, lonely or misplaced, we can look up this project and be able to find our way “home”.
